LAS VEGAS - University of Nevada (30-26) freshman Trenton Brooks collected four hits and drove in four runs as the Wolf Pack eliminated Fresno State (28-29) from the Mountain West Championship defeating the Bulldogs 10-2 at UNLV's Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The victory was the 30th of the year for the Pack while FS ends the year 28-29.
The Pack advances to play second seed and the MW regular season co-champs New Mexico (37-19-2) in an elimination game at 3 p.m.
The Pack jumped on FS starter William Munro for three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed to win the elimination contest. Brooks first hit of the day was a two-run homer.
In the second inning the Pack scored two more runs with shortstop Kyle Hunt's solo home run scoring the first run of the inning and Brooks' RBI single plating the other. Hunt laid down a RBI sacrifice bunt in the third and Nevada was on top 6-0.
FS scored twice in the fifth, the first earned runs allowed by the Pack pitching staff in three MW Championship games but that would be all for the Bulldogs. With the bases loaded Hunt turned a 6-3 double play to keep the Bulldogs from getting any closer.
Nevada scored runs in the final three innings of the game to make the final score 10-2. Brooks delivered and RBI single in the sixth, Hunt hand a RBI single in the seventh and Scott Kaplan's sacrifice bunt scored two in the bottom of the eighth.
Colby Blueberg (4-2) earned the win in relief of starter Michael Fain. Blueberg did not allow a run and just two hits in 4.2 innings on the mound. Munro (2-2) suffered the loss giving up three runs on three hits in his one inning on the mound.
Brooks (4-for-4,2R,4RBI) posted game highs with four hits and four RBI. Hunt (2-for-3,R,3RBI), Kaplan (2-for-3,2R,2RBI) and catcher Jordan Devencenzi (2-for-5) contributed two hits each as the Pack totaled 13. Brooks hit a two-run homer and Hunt a solo shot.
