Nevada drops game one at UNLV

LAS VEGAS  -  The University of Nevada (28-23, 15-13 MW) baseball team dropped the first game of a three-game MW series 8-1 at intrastate rival UNLV (31-21, 18-10 MW) in a Governor's Series contest tonight.  The loss leaves the Wolf Pack at 28-23 on the season and 15-13 in MW play while the Rebels improved to 31-21 and 18-10 in conference play.

The Pack needed to sweep the Rebels to finish in the top two in the MW standings and earn a bye in next week's MW Championship.  Nevada entered tonight's game tied with San Diego State for third but held the tiebreaker over the Aztecs.  SDSU defeated Fresno State 9-2 and is now alone in third in the MW standings with two games remaining.

After allowing a run in the bottom of the first inning the Pack got an RBI single from shortstop Kyle Hunt in the top of the third inning to tie the game at one.  The Rebels scored the final seven runs of the game to win 8-1.

Making his first start of the season Michael Bradshaw (0-1) suffered the loss allowing five runs, four earned on six hits in 5.1 innings on the mound.  John Richy (10-3) won his 10th game of the season giving up just one run in seven innings.

Pack right fielder Brad Gerig (3-for-4) led the Pack with three hits and center fielder Trenton Brooks (2-for-4) contributed two as the team totaled eight. Hunt drove in the lone Nevada run.

A.J. Hernandez (3-for-4,4RBI) topped the Rebels with three hits and drove in four.  Joey Armstrong (2-for-4,R,RBI) added two hits and drove in one with his home run leading of the first inning.
