Cole Tosses Seven Shutout Innings as Pack Wins Home Finale 10-0
RENO, Nev. - The Wolf Pack baseball team (20-27, 8-10 WAC) beat the Sacramento State Hornets (18-36, 5-15 WAC) 10-0 in the final home game of the 2011 season today.
On a day that seven seniors were honored before the game, seniors Brock Stassi, Brian Barnett, Waylen Sing Chow, Mat Keplinger and RHP Jeremy Cole played an instrumental part in Nevada's eight-inning, ten-run rule victory.
Cole (4-4, 4.14 ERA) was dominant over seven shutout innings, striking out seven Hornets hitters and allowing just six hits. Mat Keplinger (0-2, 6.23 ERA) retired one of two batters he faced in the top of the eighth inning before turning it over to RHP Tim Culligan (1-2, 7.79 ERA) got the final two outs of the game.
Offensively, Nevada racked up a season-high 16 hits and got out to a 7-0 lead after three innings.
Sing Chow (2-for-4,2-2B,RBI,2R) led off the game with his first of two doubles on the day and scored Nevada's first run on an RBI single by Stassi (4-for-5,4RBI). Stassi drove in two more runs in the second inning on a double down the left field line that brought around Sing Chow and Carlos Escobar Jr. (2-for-4,2R,RBI) to make it 3-0 Nevada.
Nick Melino (1-for-2,RBI,R,BB,HBP), Garrett Yrigoyen (3-for-5,2R), Joe Kohan (2-for-4,2RBI,2R) and Braden Shipley (1-for-4,RBI,R) all scored in the third inning to stretch the Pack's lead to 7-0.
Shipley's lone hit in the game was a game-winning single in the eighth inning that drove in Kohan to make it 10-0.
Barnett went 1-for-3 with a single and two walks in the contest.
The Wolf Pack will take on the Fresno State Bulldogs this Thursday at 6:05 p.m. at Pete Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif. before heading to San Jose for four games against the San Jose State Spartans in its final series of 2011.
