RENO, Nev.  – The University of Nevada (30-21, 10-5 WAC) baseball team defeated San Jose State (21-25, 5-10 WAC) 4-2 on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park to complete the three-game Western Athletic Conference series sweep of the Spartans.  The win was the 30th of the season for the Pack and the 10th WAC victory which keeps them atop the conference standings.

Nevada has also secured a spot in the season ending WAC Tournament May 23-27 at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz.  SJSU dropped to 21-25 overall and 5-10 in WAC action.

After three scoreless innings Nevada freshman Austin Byler hit a three-run homer down the right field line to put the Pack on top to stay 3-0.  SJSU scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to close the gap to a single run.  Senior Joe Kohan gave the Pack some insurance in the seventh as his sixth triple of the year scored Carlos Escobar to conclude the scoring as the Pack went on to win 4-2.

Senior Troy Marks (1-3) earned his first win of the season as he pitched two scoreless innings.  Matt Gardner (12) retired the side in the ninth to record his school record 12th save of the season.

Garrett Yrigoyen (2-for-4,R) led the Pack with two hits but Byler’s fourth home run of the season was the big blow that plated three in the fourth inning.

Nevada closes out the regular season at Hawai`i starting Thursday night at 9:35 p.m.  Friday and Saturday’s games are also slated for a 9:35 p.m. first pitch.
