Nevada defeats St. Mary's for 26th win

RENO, Nev.  -  The University of Nevada (26-20) baseball team defeated St. Mary's College (14-34) 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Peccole Park to record the Wolf Pack's 26th win of the season.  The 26 victories is one more than the Pack had last season going 25-32.  Nevada is now a season-high six games over .500 at 26-20.  The Gaels dropped to 14-34 on the season.

With the game tied at two going to the bottom of the fifth inning left fielder Kewby Meyer doubled to start the inning and first baseman Austin Byler followed with his 12th home run of the season to put the Pack on top 4-2.  Nevada added a single run in the bottom of the sixth on center fielder Jay Anderson's sacrifice bunt.  Right fielder TJ Friedl's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning made the final score 6-3.

Nevada scored single runs in the first and second innings while SMC scored single runs in the second and fourth innings as the game was tied at two after four innings.  The Gaels final run of the game came in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Anthony Villa.

Trenton Brooks (2-1) earned the win allowing one run on four hits in 3.2 innings on the mound.  It was Brooks' second victory in the last two days after earning his first college win in the 6-5 UC Davis victory on Tuesday night.  SMC starter Corbin Burnes (0-4) suffered the loss giving up four runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of action.

Meyer (2-for-2,2R,2B) and Byler (2-for-4,R,2RBI) had two hits apiece to lead the Wolf Pack.  

Meyer's 24th double of the season moved him into a tie for the second best season in school history with Lyle Overbay (1999), Alex Rangel (2000) and Shaun Kort (2010).  Justin Drizos (1994) holds the school record at 25 doubles set in 1994.  Meyer's 44 career doubles is tied with Matt Ortiz (1998-00) for the 10th at Nevada.

DonAndre Clark (3-for-4,RBI) topped SMC with three hits as the Gaels totaled 12.  Darian Ramage (2-for-4), Collin Ferguson (2-for-3) and Michael Valentin (2-for-3,R) contributed two hits apiece.

Nevada hosts Mountain West co-leading New Mexico (33-16-1, 16-8 MW) for a three-game conference series this weekend.  The first game of the series is Friday night at 6 p.m. and the Pack will retire former longtime head coach Gary Powers' number 17 pregame.

Saturday's game is set for 6 p.m. and there will be $1 hot dogs sold at the concession stand.  Sunday is Senior Day as the Pack's six seniors will be honored prior to first pitch.

Junior Kewby Meyer has 24 doubles on the season which is tied with Lyle Overbay (1999), Alex Rangel (2000) and Shaun Kort (2010) for the second best season in school history.

Meyer's 44 career doubles is tied with Matt Ortiz (1998-00) for the 10th at Nevada.
