RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada (23-18) baseball team defeated Sacramento State (28-18) 10-3 in a nonconference game at Aces Ballpark in downtown Reno on Wednesday night. With the victory the Wolf Pack is a season-high five games over .500 for the third time this season. The Hornets fell to 28-18.
Nevada scored twice in the bottom of the first inning as designated hitter Bryce Barger had an RBI single and third baseman Scott Kaplan a sacrifice fly. The Pack held the lead until the Hornets scored twice in the fifth to tie the game at two.
The Pack responded with a single run on a ground out from left fielder Kewby Meyer in the bottom of the fifth to score center fielder Jay Anderson to move in front to stay 3-2. Catcher Jordan Devencenzi's sacrifice bunt in the sixth made it 4-2.
The Pack put together a pair of three-run innings in the seventh and eighth innings to break open the game. Right fielder Trenton Brooks singled home two runs in the seventh and three different Nevada hitters drove in a run in the eighth to make the final scored 10-3.
Jordan Dunatov (1-0) the fourth of seven Pack pitchers earned his first win of the season retiring the only two batters he faced. Austin Ragsdale (1-1) suffered the loss allowing two runs on three hits in two innings on the mound.
Five Pack batters had multiple hits in the game led by Meyer (3-for-5,2R,2RBI) and first baseman Austin Byler (3-for-3,2R,RBI) who had three hits each. Barger (2-for-5,R,RBI), Brooks (2-for-3,R,2RBI) and Anderson (2-for-4,2R,RBI) contributed two hits each as the team tied a season-high with 16 hits. Meyer and Brooks drove in a game-high two apiece.
Nathan Lukes (3-for-5) led the Hornets with three hits while Kyle Moses (2-for-4) added two.
Nevada returns to Mountain West play this weekend with a three-game series at Air Force starting Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. PT. Saturday's game starts at noon and Sunday's finale at 11:00 a.m. PT. The Pack is currently third in the MW standings at 13-8 while the Falcons are seventh a 5-16.
