RENO, Nev. – University of Nevada (20-16, 12-8 MW) junior catcher Jordan Devencenzi hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Wolf Pack a 9-8 Mountain West victory over Fresno State (19-20, 8-12 MW) at Peccole Park on Friday night. The Pack won its 20th game of the season and are now 20-16 overall and 12-8 in conference play. The Bulldogs dropped to 19-20 and 8-12 in the MW.
Right fielder Trenton Brooks started the bottom of the 12th with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by center fielder Jay Anderson. FS intentional walked third baseman Scott Kaplan to bring Devencenzi to the plate and he delivered the single to right center field on a 1-2 pitch to give the Pack the walk-off victory.
After falling 20-10 on Thursday it looked as if game two would be a repeat as FS scored five runs in the top of the first inning off Pack starter Michael Fain to take the early advantage. Bulldog starter Jordan Brink kept the Pack in check until first baseman Austin Byler collected Nevada’s first hit of the game, a three-run homer over the center field fence and it was 5-3.
FS scored a run in the fourth but Nevada responded with two in the bottom of the inning to close within a run at 6-5. Brad Gerig hit his second home run of the year in the inning and shortstop Kyle Hunt doubled home the other run. Byler’s second home run of the game in the fifth tied the game at six.
A wild pitch and sacrifice fly by Gerig in the seventh put the Pack up 8-6. Nevada held the lead until the ninth when FS first baseman Trent Woodward doubled to the right center field gap with two down to tie the game at eight where it remained until the Devencenzi walk-off in the 12th.
Adam Whitt (5-3) won his team-high fifth game of the season allowing two runs on five hits in five innings relief. Jake Shull (2-4) suffered the loss giving up the one run on six hits in 4.1 innings on the mound.
Byler (4-for-5,3R,4RBI) had four hits, scored three runs and drove in four with his two home runs. Second baseman Justin Bridgman (3-for-4,2R) tied his season-high with three hits. Devencenzi (2-for-6,RBI) totaled two hits including the game winner.
Jordan Luplow (4-for-7,2R,2RBI) had four hits and two RBI for FS. Taylor Ward (3-for-7), Chris Mariscal (2-for-5,R,2RBI), Brody Russell (2-for-5,R) and Ryan Dobson (2-for-3) also had multiple hits for the Bulldogs.
