RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada (19-16, 4-2 WAC) baseball scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to down Louisiana Tech (17-19, 1-5 WAC) 4-3 at Peccole Park Sunday afternoon. The Wolf Pack swept the three-game Western Athletic Conference series and is now 4-2 in conference play and 19-16 overall. The Bulldogs dropped to 17-19 overall and 1-5 in WAC action.
The win was the 899th for Pack head coach Gary Powers and win 900 could happen on Tuesday when Nevada hosts San Francisco at 2 p.m.
Trailing 3-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth left fielder Tommy Niebergall walked and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Brooks Klein. Austin Byler was hit by pitch and after a pitching change Kewby Meyer walked to load the bases. Jay Anderson reached on a fielders choice that scored the tying run as he beat out the throw to first base that could have ended the game as LA Tech attempted to turn the double play. Carlos Escobar reached on a throwing error by Bulldog third baseman Beau Bayless as Byler scored the go ahead run.
Closer Matt Gardner (9) came out of the bullpen and recorded the final three outs to earn his ninth save of the season.
LA Tech scored twice in the top of the first but Nevada answered with two in the bottom of the second on Kyle Hunt’s double. The Bulldogs scratched out a run in the third inning to move in front 3-2 where it remained until the Pack scored twice in the bottom of the eighth.
Barry Timko (2-0) earned the victory striking out the only batter he faced to end the eighth inning. .
Four different Nevada players had a hit in the game with Hunt driving home two with his second inning double. Sam Alvis (3-for-5,R) had three of the Bulldogs nine hits in the game.
Notes: Nevada head coach Gary Powers recorded his 899th win at Nevada leaving him one short of 900. Matt Gardner’s ninth save is tied with Zach Basch (2003) for third most in a season at Nevada and his 15 career saves is tied with Luke Drakulich (1996-99) for second most in school history. Nevada improved to 8-8 in one-run games.
