Shipley Pitches Pack Past Louisiana Tech

RENO, Nev.  –  University of Nevada (17-16, 2-2 WAC) sophomore  Bradey Shipley pitched eight shutout innings but had to survive a Louisiana Tech (17-17, 1-3 WAC) ninth inning rally to win a Western Athletic Conference game 3-2 at Peccole Park Friday afternoon.  With the victory the Wolf Pack improved 17-16 and 2-2 in WAC play while LA Tech is now 17-17 and 1-3 in conference action.

With the Pack leading 3-0 Shipley (6-2) left after eight innings and closer Matt Gardner came in to pitch the ninth inning.  Gardner walked two and Tim Culligan replaced him on the mound.  A walk and two RBI single closed the gap to 3-2.  Culligan had to leave the game after an apparent injury on the single up the middle and third baseman Garrett Yrigoyen followed him on the mound and walked one and hit another to load the bases with one out.  Righty Sean Prihar, the fourth pitcher of the inning recorded the final two outs on a popup and ground ball to earn his first save of the season.

Left fielder Tommy Niebergall doubled to start the game and scored on Brooks Klein’s RBI double in the first to give the Pack an early 1-0 lead where it remained until the seventh inning.  After two walks Niebergall’s second double of the game scored two more and Nevada had its three runs for the game.

Shipley pitched a career-high eight innings to win his sixth game of the season and struck out five.  Prihar (1) earned his first save recording the final two outs of the game.  Jeb Stefan (2-6) suffered the loss giving up three runs on three hits.  Stefan struck out 10 and walked five.

Niebergall (2-for-4,2,2RBI) led the Pack with his two doubles and two RBI as Nevada totaled four hits in the game.   Klein extended his team-high hit streak to 14 games with his double in the first inning.

LA Tech catcher Tyler Qualls (2-for-2) had two hits for the Bulldogs and center fielder Justin Gordey drove in two with his ninth inning single.

The two teams play the second game of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
