SAN JOSE, Calif. -  After dropping the first game of today's Mountain West doubleheader  2-1 at San José State University (9-22, 5-9 MW)  the University of Nevada (14-14, 7-7) baseball team won game two 6-5 to earn a split at Municipal Stadium on Saturday.  The Wolf Pack improved to 14-14 and 7-7 in conference play while the Spartans fell to 9-22 and 5-9 in MW action.

Nevada jumped out to a 4-0 advantage after four innings of play behind the pitching of lefty Barry Timko.  In the top of the first inning right fielder Brad Gerig doubled home left fielder Kewby Meyer and first baseman Austin Byler and the Pack led 2-0.

Gerig's single in the top of the third scored Byler who reached on a double.  Designated hitter Bryce Greager doubled to start the fourth and later scored on a balk and it was 4-0 going to the top of the fifth inning.

SJSU got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to close the gap to two.  A Pack error led to one of the runs being unearned.

Both teams scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.  Pack freshman outfielder Trenton Brooks drove home the run in the seventh and junior shortstop Kyle Hunt's double scored the run in the eighth.  

In the bottom of the ninth inning Nevada closer Adam Whitt struck out the first two batters but walked the next hitters.  A single by second baseman Jacob Valdez made it a one-run game at 6-5.  Whitt struck out Matt Carroll to end the game and earn his sixth save of the season.

Timko (3-1) won his third game of the season allowing three runs, two earned in 6.1 innings on the mound.  Whitt (6) pitched the final two innings to earn his sixth save of the season.  The six saves moved him into a tie for the ninth best season in school history.

Jonathan Hernandez (0-4) lost for the fourth time this season giving up four runs on seven hits.

Gerig (3-for-4,3RBI) and second baseman Justin Bridgman (3-for-3)  tied for game-high honors with three hits each.  It was Gerig's second three-hit game of the doubleheader as he was also 3-for-4 in the first game.  He drove in three of the Pack's six runs in game two.

Brett Bautista (2-for-4) led SJSU with two hits.  Four different Spartan batters had an RBI.
