RENO, Nev. - Four University of Nevada (14-11) relievers combined to pitch four and two-thirds scoreless innings as the Wolf Pack defeated BYU (11-10) 5-4 on Friday afternoon at Peccole Park to even the series with the Cougars. BYU won Thursday's game 4-3.
With the victory the Pack improved to 14-11 while BYU is now 11-10. The third game of the series is scheduled for noon on Saturday.
Nevada led 3-0 after four innings of play before the Cougars scored four times in the top of the fifth inning to move in front 4-3. A two-run bottom of the fifth inning gave the Pack a 5-4 advantage. Third baseman Ryan Teel plated the first run of the inning with a triple over the right fielders outstretched glove and he later scored the winning run on groundout by Brooks Klein.
Reliever Sean Prihar (1-0) earned the victory retiring two hitters in the fifth inning. Matt Gardner (7) earned his seventh save of the season pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Tyler Westensiee (0-2) suffered the loss allowing a run in his two innings of work.
Second baseman Joe Kohan (2-for-4,2RBI) and left fielder Jay Anderson (2-for-2,R) led the Pack with two hits each. Kohan drove in two runs with his double in the fourth inning.
BYU shortstop Tanner Chauncey (3-for-4,R) and left fielder Christian Mua (3-for-4,RBI) had three hits apiece for the Cougars.
