OREM, Utah - The University of Nevada (10-6) baseball team scored the first seven run of the game and sophomore Tyler Wells pitched into the seventh inning as the Wolf Pack won at Utah Valley (7-8) 10-3 on Saturday afternoon. The Pack won the series finale after dropping the first two games to improve to 10-6 on the season. The Wolverines stand at 7-8.
Nevada took advantage of a UVU error in the second inning to score three times. Catcher Ryan Teel's triple scored the first two runs and he scored on a double by shortstop Shaun Mize. In the fourth inning third baseman Austin Byler's first of two home runs in the game scored three as part of a four-run inning to make it 7-0 Pack.
While the offense was scoring runs Wells was dominating the Wolverines from the mound. The lefty struck out a career-high nine in 6.2 innings. After six shutout innings he allowed two runs in the seventh and came out of the game.
The Pack scored three more times in the eighth inning with two coming on Byler's second home run of the season and sixth of the year.
Wells (3-0) won for the third time in four starts to improve to 3-0 on the season. UVU starter Andrew Freter (1-1) suffered the loss allowing seven runs, four earned on six hits.
Designated hitter Brooks Klein (3-for-4,R) led the Pack with three hits and scored a run. Byler (2-for-5,2R,5RBI) hit two home runs and drove in a game-high five. Second baseman Scott Kaplan (2-for-5,R,RBI) and Mize (2-for-4,RBI) had two hits and an RBI each.
Wolverine left fielder Kade Andrus (3-for-4,R,RBI) had three of UVU's eight hits, scored a run and drove in one.
Nevada concludes a five-game road swing at UC Davis on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. before opening Mountain West play on Friday at Peccole Park with Air Force.
