Nevada Defeats UC Davis 3-2
DAVIS, Calif. - The University of Nevada (1-9) defeated UC Davis (2-9) 3-2 in the Wolf Pack's first victory of the year.
RHP Timothy Culligan pitched three scoreless innings in his first start of the season and in a Wolf Pack uniform. Freshman Braden Shipley came in to pitch in the fourth inning and lasted 3.1 innings to earn his first win of the season.
Nevada took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a two out RBI single by Michael Turay. Hugo Hernandez and Joe Kohan scored after Hernandez singled to left center, Kohan drew a walk, and Garrett Yrigoyen was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.
Shipley gave up an unearned run in the fourth and an RBI double in the sixth to tie the game 2-2, but Nick Melino broke up the tie in the top of the seventh with his first home run of the year. Hitting from the right side of the plate, Melino hit a deep lined shot over the left field wall on the first pitch he was from LHP Nathan Slater.
Tyler Rogstad didn't get the win, but pitched out of a jam after entering the game with one out in the bottom of the seventh and runners on second and third base that kept the Pack in the game.
Rogstad got Davis center fielder Daniel Cepin to pop out to Jamison Rowe in center field for the second out, and a good throw by Rowe held Davis short stop Scott Heylman at third base. David Popkins bounced out to second baseman Jake Schu for the third out of the seventh inning, and Rogstad went on to pitch a scoreless eighth frame.
Matt Gardner faced three batters in the ninth inning, and struck out the final hitter to earn his first save of his Nevada career.
Nevada is back in action this Friday as they take on the University of Pacific Tigers in the second home series of the 2011 season.
