RENO, Nev. –  The University of Nevada (3-6, 1-3 MW) baseball team ended a six-game losing skid knocking off San José State (2-8, 1-3 MW) 6-4 on a rainy night at Peccole Park in its home opener.  The win was the first Mountain West victory of the season as the Wolf Pack stand at 1-3 in conference play and 3-6 overall.  The Spartans dropped to 2-8 and 1-3 in MW action.

Nevada scored the first four runs of the game and held on for the 6-4 victory.  Right fielder Brad Gerig’s RBI single in the bottom of the second inning scored catcher Jordan Devencenzi to give the Pack a lead they would not relinquish.

The Pack took advantage of two Spartan errors in the fifth inning to score three unearned runs.  Devencenzi had the only RBI of the inning.

SJSU scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning but Nevada answered with two in the bottom of the sixth.  Center fielder Jay Anderson had an RBI triple and Justin Bridgman’s sacrifice bunt plated another run and the Pack led 6-1

In the top of the seventh inning the Spartans got a two-out two-RBI double from left fielder Brett Bautista followed by an RBI single from first baseman Matt Carroll to close the gap to 6-4 but would get no closer.

Pack starter Michael Fain (1-1) earned the win allowing an unearned run on five hits in 5.2 innings on the mound.  Adam Whitt (2) earned his second save pitching two shutout innings.  Johnny Melero (0-1) was tagged with the loss giving up six runs, three earned in six innings of action.

Devencenzi (2-for-4,R,RBI) had two of the Pack’s eight hits in the game and drove in a run.  Gerig, Anderson and Bridgman also drove in runs for Nevada.

Carroll (3-for-4,R,RBI) collected three hits for SJSU and drove in one.  Jacob Valdez (2-for-3,R) and catcher Kyle Gallegos (2-for-5,R) had two hits apiece.  Bautista had a game-high two RBI.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
