Wolf Pack drops midweek game at Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Nevada (2-6) baseball team dropped a midweek nonconference game 7-4 to Sacramento State at Raley Field on Tuesday night. The Wolf Pack has lost six in a row and stand at 2-6 on the season while the Hornets improved to 5-4.

Nevada led 4-3 going to the bottom of the eighth inning but the Hornets scored four runs on three hits with the big blow being a three-run homer by second baseman Brandon Hunley. Hunley's home run came with two out and the game tied at four.

Sacramento State scored twice in the third to take an early 2-0 advantage. Back-to-back doubles by left fielder Kewby Meyer and catcher Jordan Devencenzi in the fifth got Nevada on the scoreboard. In the sixth third baseman Scott Kaplan and center fielder Jay Anderson collected RBI singles and Nevada led 3-2.

The Hornets answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at three. Wolf Pack first baseman Austin Byer scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning to put the Pack on top 4-3 until the big eighth inning by Sac State.

Adam Whitt (0-2) the sixth Pack pitcher in the game suffered his second loss of the season allowing four runs on three hits in 1.1 innings on the mound. Alex Palsha (1-0) earned the win giving up an unearned run in two innings of action. Sutter McLoughlin (4) recorded his fourth save retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth.

Kaplan (3-for-4,R,RBI) led the team with three hits and drove in one. Devencenzi and Anderson also had RBI's in the game.

 

 

Nathan Lukes (3-for-4,R) had three hits for the Hornets as five hitters had multiple hits on the night. Hunley (2-for-5,2R,3RBI) drove in three with his first home run of the season.

Nevada plays its home opener on Friday when San Jose State comes to Peccole Park to begin a three-game Mountain West series at 4 p.m. Saturday's game is at 2 p.m. and Sunday's first pitch is at noon.
