RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada baseball team used another strong start by Bradey Shipley to defeat Utah Valley University 6-4 at Peccole Park Friday, in the first game of a three game set.

Shipley went six innings, giving up only three hits and striking out nine Wolverine hitters. He has now pitched 11 scoreless innings to start the season and is 2-0. Running into trouble only once, Shipley got Cole McWhorter to ground into an inning-ending double play in the bottom of the fifth.

Matt Gardner saved his third game of the season, giving up one run in the ninth. He struck out Cole Butcher looking to end the game.

The Wolf Pack broke through in the bottom of the third with one run on two hits, including a Joe Kohan triple.

In the fourth, Nevada added four more runs to push the lead to five. Two runs scored on a Jay Anderson single up the middle. The freshman has now driven in four runs in the first five games of the season.

The Pack never trailed and out hit Utah Valley 14-8.

Brooks Klein hit into one of the rarest plays in baseball in the bottom of the fifth. He lined a ball right at Wolverine shortstop Kai Hatch with runners on first and second with nobody out. Hatch caught the ball, stepped on second and threw to first for a four-three triple play.

Jeremy Gendlek took the loss for Utah Valley, dropping to 0-2. He went six innings and gave up five earned runs.

Nevada will take the field next Saturday at Peccole at 1 p.m. Tyler Wells (0-0 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to take the hill for the Pack, while Blake Krahenbuhl (1-0 3.60 ERA) is set to take the ball for Utah Valley.
