Nevada downs Santa Clara 4-1 to begin season 2-0

SANTA CLARA, Calif. –  First-year University of Nevada (2-0) head baseball coach Jay Johnson won his Wolf Pack coaching debut earlier today defeating Boston College 4-1 and the Wolf Pack won the nightcap over Santa Clara (0-1) by the same 4-1 score to begin the 2014 season 2-0.  The Pack next plays Boston College Saturday evening at 5 p.m.

Game two mirrored the first game as the Pack trailed 1-0 and scored four unanswered runs to win by the same 4-1 score.

With the Pack down 1-0 a pair of freshman put Nevada on top 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning.  Freshman centerfielder Trenton Brooks delivered an RBI single to tie the game and Reno freshman infielder Justin Bridgman followed with an RBI single to put the Pack on top to stay.

Nevada scored insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings to make the final score 4-1.  Junior shortstop Kyle Hunt’s sacrifice fly scored first baseman Austin Byler in the seventh inning.  In the top of the eighth inning Bridgman walked and advanced to second base on left fielder Jay Johnson’s sacrifice bunt.  Bridgman stole third base and scored on an error by the SCU catcher to account for Nevada’s fourth and final run of the game.

Colby Blueberg (1-0) earned the win in relief of starter Michael Fain.  Blueberg pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and struck out two.  Fain allowed an unearned run on three hits in 4.1 innings on the mound.  Adam Whitt (1) struck out five tossing three innings of shutout relief to earn his first save of the season and second of his career.  D.J. Zapata (0-1) was tagged with the loss allowing two runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of action.

Byler (2-for-5,R), infielder Scott Kaplan (2-for-4,R) and Bridgman (2-for-3,R) all collected two hits and scored a run.   Hunt, Brooks and Bridgman had RBI’s.

Jose Viscaino, Jr. (2-for-4) topped the Broncos with two hits.
