RENO, Nev. -
University of Nevada rifle student-athlete Olivia Pennell was selected to compete at the 2013 NCAA Rifle Championships held March 8-9 at Converse Hall and French Field House on the campus of Ohio State. This is Pennell's first trip to the Rifle National Championships.
"Olivia has been an invaluable contributor to the team in small bore rifle this year," head coach Fred Harvey said. "She had a marvelous qualifier and is looking forward to competing at the National Championships."
Pennell, one of six individuals selected, will compete in small bore. Nevada's last student-athlete to qualify for the event as an individual was Dempster Christenson. Christenson appeared in three consecutive National Championships from 2008-2011, shooting in both air rifle and small bore. The Wolf Pack rifle team received a bid to the 2012 Championships following a strong 2011-12 campaign last season.
The junior ended the year with a great finish in small bore at the team's NCAA Qualifier match at UTEP two weeks ago. Pennell shot a season high 580 in the event to finish second behind a 584 total from Alaska's Ryan Anderson.
Nevada finished the NCAA qualifier match with an aggregate team score of 4,613. The team was 37 points shy of the 4,650 needed to qualify for the NCAA Rifle Championships.
