Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada baseball dropped the season opener 6-0 to No. 22 UC Irvine at Peccole Park on a cold Friday afternoon in Reno. The Wolf Pack could only manage three hits on the day, one off Anteater All-America right-hander Scott Gorgen.
After two scoreless innings UCI got a two run homer from left fielder Ryan Fisher in the top of the third inning to go on top 2-0. The Anteaters added a third run in the inning when catcher Aaron Lowenstein singled home third baseman Jeff Cusick and it was 3-0. In the fourth inning Fisher hit another two-run homer to make it 5-0. UCI second baseman Tyler Hoechin hit the Anteaters third home run of the game in the top of the eighth inning to make the final score 6-0.
Gorgen(1-0) got the win allowing just one hit in his six innings on the mound. Pack starter Rod Scurry(0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits.
Fisher(3-for-4,2R,RBI,2HR) finished with a game-high three hits and four RBI. Cusick(2-for-3,R) collected two of the Anteaters 11 hits.
Nevada third baseman Jason Rodriguez(2-for-4) had two the Pack’s three hits and shortstop Kevin Rodland(1-for-3) delivered the other.
The two teams square off again tomorrow at noon. Originally Saturday’s game was slated for a 1:00 p.m. start but was changed to a noon first pitch.
