RENO, Nev. The University of Nevada soccer team (0-3-1) came back from a 2-0 deficit to record a 3-3 double overtime tie with the visiting Sacramento State Hornets Friday night at Mackay Stadium.

Miranda Montejo, who recorded the Pack’s first goal of the night, became Nevada’s all-time leader in points with her goal in the 43rd minute.

Sacramento State (3-0-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 5th minute as Katie McCoy played a ball in behind the Nevada defense and found teammate Amanda Gray who beat Pack keeper Marie Cove.  The Hornets added their second goal in the 36th minute as McCoy again setup a teammate, Danielle Holloway, who finished a close-range shot to give Sacramento State a 2-0 lead.

Montejo’s goal cut the lead to 2-1 just before half.  Jill Erickson started Nevada’s scoring play, taking the ball into the box and finding Karen Zmirak.  Zmirak’s one-touch pass found Montejo who beat Sacramento State keeper Mandy Trojan to the far post.  With the two points, Montejo has recorded 40 career points and passed Kaula Rowe (39 points, 2000-03) who held the record for four years.

Cristen Drummond’s first career goal tied the game at 2-2 in the 67th minute when she headed in Devin Noe’s free kick from 40 yards out.

The Hornets retook the lead in the 87th minute when Leah Larot beat a Nevada defender and Cove to the far post.  However, Zmirak headed in a cross from Drummond for the Pack’s third goal of the game which evened the score at 3-3 in the 89th minute to force overtime.

“We finally got things going and we finally showed heart and desire,” Nevada interim head coach Antoinette Marjanovic said.  “A lot of teams would have given up in the final minutes of the game, but we didn’t.  This is a step in the right direction.”

Nevada’s best chance in overtime came with 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime.  Samantha Miller’s cross went across the face of the goal and had the keeper and Hornet defense beat, but narrowly missed connecting with Drummond on the back post.

In the 110th minute, Sacramento State’s Larot was on a breakaway but Cove came off her line and made the save on the edge of the 18-yard box.

Nevada finished the game with 15 shots (six on goal) while Sacramento State ended the game with nine (six on goal).  Drummond and Blaine Dugan each took a game-high three shots.

Cove ended the game with three saves while Torjan also made three for the Hornets.

Nevada will host San Francisco on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Mackay Stadium.
