SAN JOSE, Calif. – Blaine Dugan tied the game for the Pack in the 82nd minute but San Jose State scored the game-winner two minutes later as the University of Nevada soccer team fell at San Jose State 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
Nevada (4-7-1, 0-2 WAC) started the game quickly, recording its first shot of the game in the 3rd minute of the match. Cristen Drummond dropped the ball to Karen Zmirak whose shot from the right side went wide.
San Jose State (3-9-2, 1-1 WAC) took a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute as Jessica Scott bent in a corner kick from the left side.
Nevada nearly evened the score in the 9th minute on a shot by Drummond. Drummond won possession 40 yards out, dribbled through two Spartan defenders and found herself in a one-versus-one situation with the keeper, however, Drummond pushed her shot just wide.
In the 47th minute, Zmirak had another good look for Nevada, forcing San Jose keeper Nina Butera to make two quick saves. On the play, Jessica Thompson gained possession in the midfield, turned and found Zmirak making a run down the right. Butera came off her line to block Zmirak’s initial shot. Zmirak collected the deflection and hit another shot that the San Jose State keeper blocked out of bounds for a Nevada corner kick.
Blaine Dugan tied the game for Nevada in the 82nd minute as she bent a shot from the top of the box around Spartan keeper Butera. Jessica Thompson who recorded an assist on the play now has 12 career assists which is first all-time in the career record book. She passed Lauren Kinneman (2003-06) who recorded 11 career assists.
San Jose State retook the lead two minutes later as Kim Johnston scored off an assist from Lauren Ng-Pinkerton and Jessica Scott in the 84th minute. On the goal, the ball was crossed from the right and Sarah Hunt came out and pushed the shot away from the face of the goal. However, Johnston was making a run up the center of the field and collected the deflection and scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for San Jose State.
Hunt made her first career start in goal for Nevada, making four saves. Nevada and San Jose State each recorded 19 shots in the game with the Pack holding a seven to six advantage in shots on goal. Drummond took a game-high five shots.
Nevada will host Utah State and La Tech on Oct. 19 and 21. The Pack will take on the Aggies on Friday at 7 p.m. and will face the Lady Techsters on Sunday at 1 p.m.
