ABOUT NEVADA
Nevada extended its win streak to a season-high three games after posting a 3-0 victory over NAU at the Soccer Etc./Nike Classic in Boise, Idaho Friday to close out its non-conference schedule. The Pack will look to extend its current win streak when Nevada opens WAC play this weekend at Hawai`i and San Jose State. Nevada won both its matches with Hawai`i last season during both the regular season and WAC Tournament and also beat San Jose State 3-1 during the regular season. Karen Zmirak (4 goals, 4 assists) and Cristen Drummond (5 goals, 2 assists) lead Nevada in points with 12 each.
NEWS AND NOTES
Nevada’s three-game win streak is the team’s longest win streak of the 2007 season...the longest win streak in program history is five games set during the 2006 season while the longest unbeaten streak is six games also set last season...Nevada has recorded three shutout victories this season (2-0 over San Francisco and 3-0 over both UNLV and NAU)...Cristen Drummond’s two goals against NAU marked the first multiple-goal game of the freshman’s career...Karen Zmirak’s two assists against NAU marked the second multiple-assist game of her career...Zmirak also recorded two assists during Nevada 7-0 win at La Tech in 2006...with the Pack’s 3-0 win over NAU, the Pack tied its largest margin of victory this season as Nevada also posted a 4-1 win at UC Davis and a 3-0 victory over UNLV...during its last three games, Nevada has posted a 3-0 record, posted two shutouts and outscored it opponents 10-1...the Pack is looking for its first-ever win against Hawai`i on the road.
NEVADA All-TIME IN WAC OPENERS
Nevada is 1-5-1 all-time in WAC openers with its lone win coming at home against Fresno State in 2005, 4-2. The Pack has never opened WAC play versus Hawai`i.
GILSON NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore defender Whitney Gilson, a native of Maple Valley, Wash. (Tahoma HS), earned her first career WAC Player of the Week Honor on October 8. Gilson anchored Nevada’s defense in a 3-0 shutout against Northern Arizona Friday night. Gilson played a full 90 minutes for Nevada in the win, playing well in the air and clearing out numerous balls on the defensive end of the field. She helped the Nevada defense limit NAU to just one shot on goal in the first half of the 3-0 win. Gilson has played in seven games this season, starting the past four contests. She also played a full 90 minutes in Nevada’s 4-1 win over UC Davis and the team’s 3-0 shutout over UNLV this season.
GOALS GALORE
As a team, the Pack has recorded five multiple goal games this season through 10 games. Miranda Montejo is second all-time in career goals (16) while Karen Zmirak is third (15 goals) Samantha Miller is fourth with 13 career goals. Kaula Rowe (2000-03) currently holds the top spot in career goals scored with 18.
DEFENSE - DIFFERENT LINEUP, SAME RESULT
During its current three-game win streak, the Pack has used two different defensive starting lineups. Against UC Davis and UNLV the Pack started Marie Cove in goal and Erin Smith, Whitney Gilson, Devin Noe and Patrice Godwin and the Pack won those two games by a combined score of 7-1. Against NAU, Nevada started Cove in goal, Godwin, Gilson, Smith and Vanessa Mann and that back line did not allow a goal in Nevada’s 3-0 shutout win over NAU.
DUGAN DOES IT AGAIN
Senior midfielder Blaine Dugan recorded her team-leading second game-winning goal of the season in the Pack’s 3-0 win over NAU on Oct. 5. This season, she has scored the game-winners in Nevada’s 4-1 win at UC Davis and in the Pack’s 3-0 win over NAU. She is tied for third on the team in points (5) and has recorded 13 career points (4 goals, 5 assists).
THOMPSON’S 11
Junior Jessica Thompson’s assist on Devin Noe’s game-winning goal against San Francisco put Thompson in a tie on Nevada’s all-time assist list. Thompson, 11 career assists, is tied with Lauren Kinneman (2003-06) for the all-time record. Thompson recorded five assists during her freshman season in 2005 and also recorded five assists during her sophomore season last year in 2006. This season Thompson has recorded one assist. Samantha Miller is also climbing the all-time assist list. Miller is tied for third with 10 career assists while Miranda Montejo is fourth with 9 career assists.
IMMEDIATE IMPACT
With her two goals against NAU, Cristen Drummond became the team leader in goals with five and tied for the team lead in points with 12. She has recorded the most goals of a Nevada true-freshman since Miranda Montejo recorded nine in 2005. Drummond has scored goals against Sacramento State, UC Davis, UNLV and two versus NAU and has recorded assists versus Sacramento State and UC Davis. She has played in all 10 games this season and has made seven starts. She has recorded at least two points in each of Nevada’s last three games. Over the past two seasons a newcomer has led the Pack in goals. Montejo led the team in 2005 with nine goals while Karen Zmirak led Nevada in goals in 2006 with 11.
MOVIN’ ON UP
With her goal against Sacramento State on Sept. 14, junior Miranda Montejo became Nevada’s all-time leader in points with 40, passing Kaula Rowe (2000-03, 39 points). Montejo increased her career point total to 41 with an assist in on Sept. 16. Junior Karen Zmirak is second all-time with 38 career points while junior Samantha Miller is third all-time in career points with 36. This season Montejo and Miller have each recorded five points while Zmirak has recorded 12. Kaula Rowe (2000-03) is second all-time in career points with 39, a record she held since 2003 until Montejo broke it four games into her junior season in 2007.
SCOUTING THE HAWAI`I RAINBOW WAHINE (WAC)
All-Time Series: Hawai`i leads the all-time series 6-2.
Last Meeting: Nevada won both of its matches with Hawai`i in 2006, beating the Rainbows by a combined 8-0 in its two wins last season. The Pack beat Hawai`i 5-0 on Oct. 27, 2006 and downed Hawai`i 3-0 in the first round of the 2006 WAC Tournament in Reno, 3-0.
A Look at Hawai`i: The Rainbows are 7-3-2 overall this season. Hawai`i opened the season with a 4-0 win over #26 Kansas. Hawai`i recorded a tie in its most recent game, recording a 1-1 (2OT) draw at Pepperdine. Taryn Fukuroku leads the team in points (16) and is tied for the team lead in goal (5). Ambree Ako has also recorded 5 goals for Hawai`i. Goalkeeper Kori Lu has played in 10 games and has seen the most time in goals for Hawai`i (836:47). She has allowed 11 goals, has a 1.18 GAA and has recorded two shutouts. The Rainbows are coached by Pinsoom Tenzing who is in his 13th season at Hawai`i.
SCOUTING THE SAN JOSE STATE SPARTANS (WAC)
All-Time Series: San Jose State leads the all-time series 5-2-1.
Last Meeting: Nevada recorded a 3-1 victory over San Jose State on Oct. 29, 2006. Jessica Wilcox, Devin Noe and Kenishia Warren each scored for the Pack.
A Look at San Jose State: The Spartans are 2-8-2 this season and are coming off a 1-1 weekend against St. Mary’s (L, 0-1) and UC Irvine (W, 2-1). Jessica Scott leads the team in goals (4) and points (8). Jackie Zabek and Kristin Krale have each recorded five points for the Spartans. Keeper Nina Butera has played in nine games this season and has a 1.09 GAA and has allowed 10 goals. As a team, San Jose has recorded 12 goals while they have allowed 18. The Spartans are coached by Dave Siracusa who is in his fourth year with San Jose State.
FREE SOCCER CLINIC BEFORE LA TECH GAME
The University of Nevada women’s soccer coaching staff will hold a free clinic for children 8th grade and under on October 21st at 11:00 am at Mackay Stadium. During the free clinic, the Nevada coaching staff will conduct sessions covering all aspects of the game. Children participating in the clinic are invited to stay for free to watch the Nevada soccer team take on Louisiana Tech at 1:00pm. Karen Zmirak is tied for seventh in shots (26)...Zmirak and Cristen Drummond are tied for fourth in points (12 each)...Zmirak is tied for third in assists (4) while Drummond is tied for 10th (2)...Blaine Dugan is tied for first in game-winning goals (2)...Marie Cove is tied for second in goals against average (1.17) and is tied for fifth in saves (35).
LAST WEEK’S RESULTS (1-0)
*Friday vs. NAU
The University of Nevada team extended its win streak to three games beating NAU 3-0 Friday night. Off the corner kick Jessica Thompson took, the Lumberjack defense was unable to clear the ball and Karen Zmirak fired a shot that was blocked and the deflection found Blaine Dugan who beat the keeper to the upper right corner, giving Nevada a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute. The Pack increased its lead to 2-0 in the 18th minute. Thompson took the ball end line on the left side and hit a cross that found Zmirak on the back post. Zmirak sent the ball back across the face of the goal to Drummond who beat the NAU keeper inside the left post. Drummond scored her second goal of the match in the 38th minute to give Nevada a 3-0 lead. Vanessa Mann brought down an NAU clearance deep in Nevada’s territory. After settling the ball, Mann played a long ball into Drummond on the right side. Drummond beat her defender and the NAU keeper to the near post, scoring her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
GBYSL GAME-DAY INFORMATION
Thanks to a donation to the Nevada soccer program, all members of the Great Basin Youth Soccer League U-14 and younger, will get in free to all of Nevada’s home matches by showing a copy of their GBYSL membership card at the gate. Due to NCAA rules, high school players who play in the GBYSL are not eligible.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Nevada will return to Mackay Stadium on Oct. 19 and 21, playing host to Utah State and La Tech. The Pack will take on the Aggies on Friday at 7 p.m. and will face the Lady Techsters on Sunday at 1 p.m.
