BOX SCORE

BOISE, IdahoThe University of Nevada team extended its win streak to three games beating NAU 3-0 Friday night at the Soccer Etc./Nike Classic in Boise, Idaho.  With the win Nevada improves to 4-5-1 while NAU falls to 5-3-3.

Nevada scored three goals on an NAU team that had allowed just two goals through its first 10 games of the season.

In the eighth minute, Samantha Miller played the ball into Cristen Drummond who cut in towards the goal and hit a shot that was tipped over the crossbar for a Nevada corner kick.

Off the corner kick Jessica Thompson took, Whitney Gilson and a NAU defender went up for the header and the ball dropped in NAU’s box.  The Lumberjack defense was unable to clear the ball and Karen Zmirak fired a shot that was blocked and the deflection found Blaine Dugan who beat the keeper to the upper right corner, giving Nevada a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute.

The Pack increased its lead to 2-0 in the 18th minute.  Thompson took the ball end line on the left side and hit a cross that found Zmirak on the back post.  Zmirak sent the ball back across the face of the goal to Drummond who beat the NAU keeper inside the left post.

Drummond scored her second goal of the match in the 38th minute to give Nevada a 3-0 lead.  Vanessa Mann brought down an NAU clearance deep in Nevada’s territory.  After settling the ball, Mann played a long ball into Drummond on the right side.  Drummond beat her defender and the NAU keeper to the near post, scoring her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

“Straight from the kickoff we played hard and finished our opportunities in the first half and in the second half we came out and preserved the shutout with good team defense,” interim head coach Antoinette Marjanovic said.  “This was an efficient performance that sets us up nicely as we head into WAC play.”

Nevada held NAU to just one shot on goal in the first half while the Pack recorded 14 shots, nine on goal in the first half.

In the 51st minute, NAU’s Carolyn Savage fired a shot from 25-yards out that Nevada keeper Marie Cove tipped over the crossbar to keep NAU off the board.  Cove also came off her line and blocked a point-blank shot from NAU’s Kayla Bauder in the 82nd minute.

Trisha Gibbons narrowly missed recording the Pack’s fourth goal of the night in the 85th minute as her shot from 30 yards out went just wide.

Nevada ended the game with 18 shots (nine on goal) while NAU finished with 13 (eight on goal).  Zmirak took a game-high five shots.  Cove, who recorded her third shutout of the season, ended the game with eight saves.

Nevada will open WAC play at Hawaii on Oct. 12th at 7 p.m. HT and will play at San Jose State on Oct. 14 at 3:30 p.m. PT.
