ABOUT NEVADA
The Pack returns 10 letterwinners and eight starters from last season’s squad that posted a program-best 13-5-4 record, won its first WAC Tournament title and made its first trip to the NCAA Tournament. Nevada’s top returners include: forward Samantha Miller (2007 Preseason All-WAC Team, 2006 first team All-WAC); defender Jessica Wilcox (2007 Preseason All-WAC Team, 2007 WAC Preseason Co-Defender of the Year, 2006 first team All-WAC); Karen Zmirak (2006 second team All-WAC, leading goal scorer,11) and Miranda Montejo 2006 second team All-WAC). In addition, the Pack’s incoming class was ranked number one in the WAC for the third consecutive year by Soccer Buzz.
NEVADA IN SEASON OPENERS
Nevada is 1-5-1 in season openers. The Pack won its season opener in 2006, a 2-0 road victory at Sacramento State while the Pack opened the 2005 season with a 1-1 tie versus UC Riverside.
NEVADA “CAMP DAY” SET FOR SEPTEMBER 2
Nevada’s game versus Portland State on Sunday, September 2 at 2 p.m., will be “Camp Day.” Those who participated in Nevada’s 2007 Summer Soccer Camps (both the youth and high school camps) will get in free to the Portland State game by wearing their 2007 Nevada soccer camp t-shirt.
GBYSL GAME-DAY INFORMATION
Due to a donation to the Nevada soccer program, all members of the Great Basin Youth Soccer League U-14 and younger, will get in free to all of Nevada’s home matches by showing a copy of their GBYSL membership card at the gate. Due to NCAA rules, high school players who play in the GBYSL are not eligible.
A RUN AT THE RECORDS
A handful of Nevada’s current players are on pace to break some of the Pack’s career records this season. Junior Miranda Montejo is second all-time in career points (36) and needs just four points to claim sole possession of first. Montejo is also second in career goals (14) and needs five goals to be number one. Junior Jessica Thompson is second all-time in career assists (10) and needs just two assists to move into first all-time. Junior Samantha Miller is fourth all-time in career assists (9) while Montejo is fifth (8). SCOUTING THE OREGON DUCKS (Pac-10)
All-Time Series: Oregon leads the all-time series, 2-1. All three meetings between the two schools have been decided by one goal.
Last Meeting: Nevada posted a 2-1 win at Oregon on Sept. 22, 2006. Karen Zmirak gave Nevada a 1-0 lead before the Ducks tied the game in the 59th minute. Lauren Kinneman scored the game-winner for the Pack with just five minutes remaining in the match.
A Look at Oregon: The Ducks return 10 starters from its 2006 team that finished 12-6-2 overall and second in the Pac-10 with a 6-1-2 record. Oregon’s top returners include defenders Dylann Tharp and Danielle Sweeney, who were both all-conference honorable mention selections last year. The Ducks also return their starting goalkeeper, Jessie Chatfield, who already owns the Oregon career record for shutouts with 12 and recorded a 0.82 GAA last season. The Ducks are coached by Tara Erickson who is in her third season.
SCOUTING THE PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS (Big Sky)
All-Time Series: Nevada holds a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series.
Last Meeting: Nevada posted a 1-0 win in Portland on Sept. 24, 2006. Miranda Montejo scored the game’s lone goal in the 22nd minute off an assist from Aivi Luik.
A Look at Portland State: The Vikings return 15 letterwinners from its 2006 squad that ended last season with a 4-13-1 overall record and a 4-3 mark in conference play. Portland State returns three-time All-Big Sky performer, defender Juli Edwards. The Vikings top returners also include forward Dolly Enneking (led the team in goals, 4, and points, 9) and goalkeeper Cris Lewis (11 games started, 1.23 GAA, 63 saves). Portland State is coached by third-year head coach Tim Bennett.
EXHIBITION RESULTS (AUG. 17 & 19)
vs. Chico State (Friday)
Just three days into its 2007 preseason, the University of Nevada soccer team played its first match, falling to the visiting Chico State Wildcats 1-0 in double overtime on Aug. 17. Nevada’s starting lineup featured three freshmen, goalkeeper Marie Cove, defender Erin Smith and midfielder Jill Erickson. Smith had a good look in the fifth minute of the match when she connected with Devin Noe’s free kick from 40 yards out, but Smith’s header went wide. Drummond took a good shot in the 39th minute off a pass from Karen Zmirak. Zmirak flicked the ball to herself over a Chico State defender and played a ball to Drummond in the box. Durmmond found herself in a one versus one with the Wildcats keeper who came off her line and was able to make the save. The Wolf Pack held a 10-5 advantage in shots but Chico State recorded five shots on goal to Nevada’s four. Samantha Miller, Kenishia Warren and Miranda Montejo all took a team-high two shots for the Pack. Miller saw her shot in the 94th minute go just wide. Cove played the complete game in goal for the Pack, making four saves.
vs. CS Stanislaus (Sunday)
Nevada scored one goal in the first half and added two more in the second en route to a 3-0 exhibition win over CS Stanislaus Sunday. The Pack’s starting lineup featured five freshmen, goalkeeper Marie Cove, defenders Erin Smith and Vanessa Mann and midfielders Jill Erickson and Cristen Drummond. Nevada got on the board in the 31st minute on a goal by Jessica Thompson. Kenishia Warren took the ball down the right side of the field and got a cross off that found Thompson on the back post. Thompson hit a one-time volley to the far post that beat the CS Stanislaus keeper. Drummond scored the Pack’s second goal of the night in the 52nd minute off an assist from Devin Noe. Noe played a long ball out of the back to Drummond who took the ball down the right side of the field. Drummond took a shot from the right corner that beat Sitarz to the upper corner of the far post. Trisha Gibbons scored Nevada’s final goal of the night in the 79th minute. Noe crossed the ball from the left side of the field, bringing Sitarz off her line. Sitarz got a hand on Noe’s cross but couldn’t come up with the save and Gibbons collected the ball on the back post and hit a shot past the Warrior’s diving keeper. Cove played 45 minutes in goal for the Pack and recorded one save. Newcomer Sarah Hunt played the second half in goal for Nevada and did not face any shots.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
The Pack will travel to Tucson, Ariz. on Sept. 7 for a matchup with Pac-10 opponent Arizona at 6 p.m. PT. Nevada will return to Mackay Stadium on Sept. 14 and 16 hosting Sacramento State and San Francisco.
