Coaching Experience Nigel Burton returns for year No. 2 in Reno, guiding a Wolf Pack defense that should be one of the most improved in the WAC this season. Burton will again serve as the coordinator and will coach the safeties this season A budding star in the coaching profession, Burton has built a reputation as one of the top recruiters on the West Coast. His tenure in Reno marks his first chance in control of a defense.

During his first season with the silver and blue in 2008, the Wolf Pack doubled its interception total from the year before and recorded 36 sacks and 100 tackles for losses, with both totals marking dramatic increases from the season before. Burton came to Nevada after five seasons at Oregon State, where was named one of the top recruiters in the Pac-10 Conference by Rivals.com. During his time at Oregon State, the Beavers ranked among the Pac-10 leaders in a number of defensive categories. He previously worked at Portland State and also spent part of 2002 in the NFL as a coaching intern with the Denver Broncos. He worked as a graduate assistant at South Florida.
Playing Experience After a stellar playing career at Jesuit High School in Sacramento, Burton headed south to the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. He lettered as a freshman defensive back, recording 85 tackles in 11 games before the school dropped the football program. He transferred to the University of Washington, where he started 35 of 36 games at safety for the Huskies and helped the team to three straight bowl game appearances. He was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic Team selection during his career in Seattle.
Personal Burton earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in 1999. He earned an MBA from the University of South Florida in 2001. He and his wife, Heather, have a son, Jace, and welcomed daughter Ella Joyce in July of 2009.
