San Jose, Calif. – The University of Nevada(31-24, 18-14 WAC) baseball team dropped its fourth consecutive game to San Jose State(31-23, 17-14 WAC) at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif. Sunday afternoon by a score of 8-7.  With the loss the Wolf Pack finished third in the Western Athletic Conference standings at 18-14 and are 31-24 overall.  The Spartans improved to 17-14 in conference play, leaving them fourth in final standings and are 31-23 overall.  The two teams will square off on Thursday night at 5:00 p.m. Pacific time in the final game of the first day of the WAC Tournament at JC Love Field in Ruston, La.

Nevada struck first with a single run on three hits in the top of the first inning off Spartan starter Brandon Hennessey.  Consecutive singles by left fielder Matt Bowman, third baseman Jason Rodriguez and first baseman Shaun Kort scored the run.

The Pack added two more runs in the top of the second inning to go in front 3-0.  Back-to-back doubles by shortstop Kevin Rodland and catcher Tyson Jaquez scored the first run.  Second baseman Brian Lloyd’s bunt moved Jaquez to third base where he scored on center fielder Jason Sadoian’s ground out to second base.

SJSU sent nine players to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and four scored to take the lead 4-3.  The first run scored when catcher Anthony Aguilera was hit by pitch with the bases loaded.  Pinch hitter Craig Hertler drove in two with a single and second baseman Karson Klauer put the Spartans on top with a single.

In the top of the sixth the Pack responded with four runs as nine hitters batted in the inning.  With two down back-to-back doubles by Jaquez and Lloyd tied the game.  Sadoian put Nevada back on top with a single and Bowman drew a walk.  Rodriguez followed with a triple to score two runs and it was 7-4.

After the first two hitters of the bottom of the sixth were retired by relief pitcher Chris Garcia right fielder Alex Sofranac doubled.  Garcia made a costly throwing error on a ball hit back to the mound that would have ended the inning and the next four Spartan hitters collected singles as four unearned run scored to put SJSU back on top 8-7.  That’s were it remained as Nevada was unable to score in its final four innings of the game

Garcia(2-4) suffered the loss giving up the four unearned runs on five hits, retiring two hitters in the sixth inning.  Anthony Vega(3-2) pitched 3.1 shutout innings to earn the win for the Spartans.

Rodriguez(3-for-5,2RBI) and Jaquez(3-for-4,2R,RBI) led Nevada with three hits apiece while Bowman(2-for-3,2R) added two.  Sadoian and Rodriguez each drove in two runs in the game.
