Women’s Hoops Falls on the Road

MORAGA, Calif. - The University of Nevada women's basketball team fell at St. Mary's 65-52 Friday night in Moraga, Calif. 

With the loss, Nevada falls to 2-1 in the year while St. Mary's improved to 2-1.

In the first half neither team led by more than four points.  The Pack opened the game with an early 4-0 lead on a layup by Jennifer Gross and a long two by Johnna Ward.  St. Mary's went ahead by four, 20-16, with 7:40 left in the half.  The Gales took a two-point lead into halftime, 24-22. 

Nevada shot 33.3 percent (10-of-30) from the floor in the first half while St. Mary's shot 36.0 percent (9-of-25) from the floor.  Ward led the Pack at the half with eight points while five Nevada players each recorded two boards for the Pack. 

The first half of the game featured seven lead changes and four ties as the Pack forced 17 turnovers and scored 11 points off those turnovers.   

In the second half, St. Mary's opened the half on a 7-3 run to go up by six, 31-25.  The Pack cut the lead to two on a layup by Ward with 15:37 left in the game before St. Mary's used a 20-2 run over eight minutes to go ahead by 20, 51-31, with 8:15 left.

Nevada cut the lead to 12 on three occasions with under six minutes to play but the Pack could not get any closer as St. Mary's posted the 65-42 win.

Ward scored a season-high 21 points and has scored in double figures in each game of Nevada's three games this season.  Nicole Williams tied her career high with 12 points.  Marissa Hammond and Nicole Williams each recorded six boards.
