Wolf Pack’s De Vrye and Verberne Win Matador Invitational

Northridge, Calif.- Nevada’s Florence De Vrye and Emma Verberne led the women’s tennis team this weekend at the Matador Invitational, Nov. 13-15 as the two won the tournament in doubles.

The Wolf Pack’s De Vrye and Verberne were in the doubles A flight and defeated Sarah Cassman and Hannah Drake of Air Force 8-4 in round one. De Vrye and Verberne continued in round two as they won over CSUN’s Doane Brooke and Anna Yang 8-6. In the finals De Vrye and Verberne defeated Michelle Murphy and Sofia Novak of UCSB 8-6 to win the tournament.

Nevada’s Aodhnait Lombard and Lais Ogata received a bye in round one of doubles play, then fell to USCB’s Annabel Gledden and Natalia Lozano 8-6.

Nevada’s Ogata led the team in individual play. Ogata, in the flight B, received a bye in round one before defeating Tiffany Mai of CSUF 6-1; 6-4 in round two. Ogata then won in the quarterfinals over Bryanna Ojeda (UCSB) 7-5; 6-0. In the semifinals Ogata fell to Marlena Pietzuch 6-4; 6-3.

Lombard received a bye in round one of the individual B flight, yet was defeated in round two by CSUN’s Yang 4-6; 6-4; 6-1 and moved into the back draw of the B flight. In the back draw Lombard qualified for the finals, yet didn’t play the final round due to time constraints.

In the individual A flight, the Wolf Pack’s Verberne was defeated in round one by Natasha Marks of Arizona, 6-3,6-2. De Vrye, who received a bye for round one, was defeated in round two by Sofia Novak (UCSB) 4-6; 6-4; 6-4.

“It was nice to have a strong finish to our final tournament of the fall,” Head Coach Sylvain Malroux said. “The team has been improving tremendously throughout this semester and we are excited for the spring season.”

The Matador Invitational marks the end of the women’s fall season. The pack will start up again Jan. 11-17 at the Hawaii Training Camp, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
